Easter weekend Lubbock trip: 4/22: Mason, Menard, Eldorado, Mertzon, Big Lake, Garden City, Stanton, Lamesa, Tahoka

Llano jail, we missed it on our first time around!

Mason jail, you can see a prisoner in stripes in the doorway!

Mason courthouse, 1909.
Architect: E. H. Hosford & Co.
Nice courthouse, cool old jail still in use!  Sheriff had just booked somebody and they were wearing stripes!  Mason is a cute town of lovely stone houses.

Menard courthouse, 1931.
Architect: Withers & Thompson
Menard's historic irrigation canal ("The Ditch") was kind of neat.  Cute train depot.

Eldorado jail.

Eldorado courthouse, 1924.
Architect: Henry T. Phelps
Cute courthouse, desolate town.  We had burgers at the gas station.  We looked for the YFZ Ranch on our way out of town, but it was a ways down a different road.

Mertzon courthouse, 1937.
Architect: David S. Castle
Courthouse is on top of a hill.  Town is tiny and quiet.

Sherwood courthouse, 1889, former county seat of Irion County.  This was a charming surprise and one of our favorite courthouses!  If you ever have the opportunity to go to Sherwood, DO!  It's a lovely little town!  Sherwood seems to be where all the people live and they work in Mertzon, maybe?

Big Lake courthouse, 1927.
Architect: David S. Castle
This area is very flat.

Garden City jail.  This WAS the old courthouse until the "new" one was built in 1909.

Garden City courthouse, 1909.
Architect: Edward C. Hasford & Co.
This is a pretty courthouse and old jail, but there's not much to the town.

Stanton courthouse, 1975.
Architect: Riherd & Huckabee
Cute enough town, blah '70's courthouse with a gazebo made of old courthouse parts in the back.

Stanton jail - we saw a prisoner vacuuming out a police car here.

Lamesa courthouse, 1916, each side has a different mural painted above the doors.
Architect: Sanguinet & Staats
There are loudspeakers around the town square that broadcast stuff all day long - kind of weird!
Otherwise the town is unremarkable.  Kobi climbed the stairs (at age 14) to scavenge out of a trash can on the landing!

Tahoka courthouse, 1916.
Architect: W. R. Rice

Tahoka jail.
